Siavonga PF calls end to succession wrangles

Siavonga, November  14, 2014, ZANIS…….The Partriotic Front (PF) in Siavonga district has called for an end to succession wrangles that have rocked the ruling party since the death of President Michael Sata.

President Sata died in a London hospital on October 28 and was buried this week on November 11.

ZANIS reports that Siavonga PF chairperson Ephraim Mwanjawantu said today that the leadership crisis should be sorted out so that the party could move forward and start preparing for the presidential by-election scheduled for January 2015.

Mr Mwanjawantu said the party cannot afford to continue bickering for a presidential candidate to be nominated as time was running out.

He noted that the mode for selecting the presidential candidate has to be reached so that the party could start preparing for elections.

The chairperson pointed out that if the party decides to go for a general conference, preparation have  to be put in place to elect the successor to the late President.

Mr Mwanjawantu suggested that if the party does not have enough resources for the general conference, they could still hold it within provinces and the recommendations could be sent to the National Executive Committee (NEC) to endorse the preferred candidate.

63 PF Members of Parliament yesterday endorsed Defence and Justice Minister Edgar Lungu as the sole candidate for presidential by-election but  Acting President Guy Scott has dismissed the decision and called for the party constitution to be followed.

Dr Scott has maintained that the general conference was the only mode of electing a presidential candidate as stipulated in the party constitution.
