Acting Chikankata District Commissioner Sekani Tembo has called on the local people to support government efforts towards developing the newly created district.

Mr. Tembo was speaking at the handover of the site for the construction of Chikankata district township to the contractors at Nega Nega yesterday.

Five local construction companies were awarded contracts to build Chikankata district township.

These are Davies Bet Enterprises Ltd, Royal Kent General Dealers, Lamsa Enterprises Ltd, Chusaka Construction Company Ltd and Shumpe Investments.

The five construction companies will be in charge of building the Post Office, the district administration block, ten medium houses for the Ministry of Works and Supply, district police station, eight low cost houses and two medium cost houses and other external works.

Apart from that, there will be the construction of 20 low cost houses for the Ministry of Works and Supply.

Mr. Tembo has since urged all the contractors to employ local people as they begin their works.

He said employing local people was in line with government policy of job creation in the newly created districts.

He said as the district is developing, more people will be employed either as casual workers or on contract basis.

Meanwhile, Managing Director for LAMSA Enterprises Ltd Alexander Mumbi promised to perform accordingly in order to carry on the legacy of the late President Michael Sata.

Mr. Mumbi said although people have reservations on awarding contracts to the local companies, he would prove that they too can do an excellent work.

And speaking at the same event, Southern Province Building Engineer Mungole Muyambango urged the contractors to remain committed to their work for this was only the beginning of many jobs to come.
