– Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Director General  Rosewin Wandi says Zambia has lost a gallant, fearless and committed leader in the fight against corruption following the demise of President Michael Sata.

Ms. Wandi says President Sata spared no-one in his resolve to fight corruption adding that the anti-corruption law was strengthened further during his administration.

Ms. Wandi described the late President  Sata as a great crusader against corrupt elements in the  country including his own Cabinet and deputy ministers since ascending  to power.

ZANIS reports that Ms Wandi was speaking during a Special interview on ZNBC television today where she explained President Sata’s contribution to the fight against corruption.

Ms Wandi added that under President Sata’s leadership, a special institutional framework was established within the Commission to effectively investigate and prosecute complex corruption cases.

“ We will greatly miss him and his leadership in the fight against graft. On behalf of the Board of Commissioners, Management and Staff of the ACC, I wish to convey our profound condolences to the First Lady Dr. Christine Kaseba-Sata, the First Family, the Government and the nation as a whole. We pray for the Lord’s own strength and comfort during this difficult time”, said Ms Wandi.

During the three-year tenure of Mr. Sata, Youth and Sport Minister Chishimba Kambwili, North-western Province Permanent Secretary Amos Malupenga and former labour Deputy Minister Ronald Chitotela are some of the of the senior government officials that appeared before the Commission for corruption allegations but the trio have since been cleared.

However, the ACC concluded its investigations into allegations of corruption against former Agriculture Deputy Minister Rodgers Mwewa and the case has since been handed over to the National Prosecution Authority for possible prosecution.

Meanwhile, the Southern African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD) has urged members of the ruling PF to continue according the late President Sata the same respect as they did  when he was alive by desisting from engaging in violence that may undermine the rule of law.

SACCORD Executive Director Boniface Cheembe  further urged the ruling party leadership to ensure that transitions within the party do not lead to violence which may affect the rest of the country.

Mr  Cheembe said as the nation mourns and prepares to put the Fifth President to rest, Zambians should   remain peaceful and prayerful in order to receive God’s guidance.

Mr. Cheembe in a statement to ZANIS in Lusaka today that SACCORD received Mr. Sata’s death with shock and sadness and described him as a  gallant son of the soil.

“SACCORD will remember Mr. Sata for bringing hope to the nation and the entire region that it was possible to remove a sitting government from power peacefully despite the advantages of incumbency. Mr. Sata will also be remembered for always wanting to make difficult situations easy through his humorous approach to issues,” Mr. Chembe said.

Mr Cheembe added that President Sata’s name would stand out for the many great things he did for the people of Zambia in his life.

“President Sata’s name will be written in the history of this country about Zambia’s former Presidents because of the out-standing many great things he did,” he said.

Mr. Sata’s body arrives in the country tomorrow, November 1, 2014 from London and will be laying in state at the Mulungushi International Conference Center before burial on November 11.

President Sata will be buried at the Presidential burial site at Embassy Park opposite Cabinet Office  in Lusaka.
