Boy, nine, dies after jubilee celebrations

—–Zambia’s Golden Jubilee celebrations in Mansa district ended on a sad note when a nine-year-old boy died after a water tank fell on him at Kaole stadium.


Brian Mwape of Mwenda village in Chief Chimese’s chiefdom died when a 5000 litre-water tank fell on him after the scaffold on which the water tank was mounted failed to contain the wait from the tank.


Disclosing the matter to ZANIS in Mansa, Luapula Province Police Commissioner, Malcolm Mulenga, said the boy died upon reaching the hospital as a result of too much bleeding from internal injuries.


He said the body of the deceased was identified by his uncle, Peter Kaunda, 42 ,of the same village and burial is due to take place today.

Meanwhile, Commissioner Mulenga said Lontia Chungu, 15, of Kabuta village, was also injured at the same accident.


Mr Mulenga said Chungu sustained injuries on her forehead, right hand and broken leg and is admitted to Mansa General Hospital.


In another development, police in Mansa yesterday arrested Chief Chisunka of Mansa district for causing death by dangerous driving.


Mr Mulenga said Chief Chisunka, who was driving a Toyota Prado, registration number ASB 47, hit Isaac Musonda, 28, of Shapi village in Chief Chimese’s Chiefdom who was walking along the Mansa road.


He said due to the impact of the accident, Musonda sustained fatal injuries and died on the spot.


Mr Mulenga said Chief Chisunka has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving contrary to Section 161 Act 11of 2002 of the Laws of Zambia and will appear in court on October 29, 2014.
