Take pride in Zambia’s achievements – Scott

ZAMBIANS must be proud of the country’s achievements in the last 50 years, vice-president Guy Scott has said.
Dr Scott said there is no need for Zambians to be shy about the achievements the country has made because evidence is there for all to see.
“We might have gotten our independence quite early but we have made good use of it. We must not be shy of the achievements we have made thus far. We must be proud of our country and the progress we have made,” Dr Scott said.
Speaking during a golden jubilee breakfast in honour of Zambian freedom fighters in Lusaka yesterday, Dr Scott also noted the importance of acknowledging and appreciating everybody who might have played a role in the liberation struggle.
The celebrations were held under the theme ‘Commemorating God’s favour of Zambia’s 50 years of Independence for continued peace, unity, democracy, patriotism and prosperity’.
Dr Scott, who described the three-day jubilee celebrations as memorable, said it is unfortunate that President Sata as the guest of honour for the festivities was not able to celebrate with Zambians due to his ill-health.
“This is not my show; it is a show for former president Kaunda and other freedom fighters. I am just President Sata’s chola boy. President Sata is the real guest of honour who should have been here celebrating with the nation.
“The greatest gift would have been to have President Sata back here with us in good health. I wish him well and look forward to Zambia’s 51st independence anniversary together so that we can compensate for this year,” he said.
A freedom fighter, Mama Chibesa Kankasa, thanked government for acknowledging the role that freedom fighters played in the liberation struggle.
“We thank this government for recognising us and the significant role we played. This was shown during the preparations for the golden jubilee; we were included at all stages of the preparations. We had been made to feel like we are part of the celebrations,” she said.
