—–Shiwang’andu District Commissioner (DC), Moses Katebe, has commended farmers in the district for the increased maize production in the 2013/2014 farming season.

Mr Katebe said he is impressed that Shiwang`andu has recorded an increase in the maize production by 74%  in the 2013/2014 farming season as confirmed by acting District Agricultural Coordinator (DACO), Edwin Kikamba.

He has since urged the farmers to work extra hard in the 2014/2015 farming season in order to have excess maize and avoid a hunger situation in the district.

Mr Katebe said this in an interview with the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Shiwang`andu today.

The DC disclosed that farming inputs are readily available to facilitate the 2014/2015 farming season, adding that distribution of the inputs to the beneficiaries has already commenced.

Mr Katebe has called on farmers in the district to start preparing for this farming season, saying rains in Shiwang`andu have come early this year.

He further said government remains committed to promoting higher farming production through crop diversification in Shiwang`andu and the country at large.

Meanwhile, the DC said preparations of the  Golden Jubilee Independence Anniversary are moving on well, adding that the celebrations will also be commemorated in the 11 Wards of Shiwang`andu district.

Mr Katebe said the anniversary will be celebrated in the wards so that those who cannot manage to travel long distances could be part of the celebrations in their respective areas.

The District Commissioner has since urged councillors to organise the Anniversary Celebrations well in their particular wards.
