The Provincial Medical Office in the Eastern province has donated assorted items to Chipata Central Prison to alleviate problems faced by inmates.

Donating the items, Regional Medical Officer, Kennedy Malama, said his office had thought of doing something outside its usual routine following the money donated by the workers at the institution to buy the items.

Dr. Malama noted that inmates deserved certain basic necessities and it was for this reason that the health institution had thought of coming to their aid during this time when the country was commemorating its Golden jubilee.

And receiving the items, Eastern Province Prisons Commanding Officer Simasiku Mwizabi said the donation would go a long way in helping the inmates.

Mr. Mwizabi said the prison in Chipata currently had 873 inmates who needed help from well-wishers during the time they were in incarceration.

The items donated included seven cases of sugar, five containers of cooking oil, seven cases of boom bar soap and five by 50 kilogram bags of salt among other items all valued at K 5,226-00.
