GOVERNMENT has instituted investigations into reports that police officers at Linda Police Post in Lusaka’s Kanyama are allegedly harbouring criminals.
Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Stephen Kampyongo said Government has taken seriously reports by Kanyama member of Parliament Gerry Chanda that police officers at Linda Police Post are allegedly protecting criminals.
“Why should we entertain police officers who are harbouring criminals when they are supposed to maintain law and order?” he said.
Mr Kampyongo said Government is looking at the gravity of the complaint against the police officers and it will take appropriate action after investigations are completed.
He said it will not be prudent for Government to transfer the police officers because they might continue with their alleged criminal activities.
Mr Kampyongo also said the Ministry of Home Affairs will conduct its own investigations while the Police Public Complaints Authority (PPCA) will institute an inquiry into the matter.
Mr Kampyongo said if found guilty, the police officers will be disciplined or fired from the Zambia Police Service.
Colonel Chanda alleged that police officers at Linda Police Post are harbouring dangerous criminals.
Col Chanda said the calibre of police officers at Linda Police Post is poor.
“I don’t want them here. They are criminals, they harbour criminals who terrorise the residents in Linda township, Buckley Estates and surrounding areas,” he said.
Col Chanda said the current crop of police officers at Linda Police Post is a danger to society because of the criminal activities they are allegedly engaged in.
“I will be seeing the Inspector General of Police (IG) tomorrow (yesterday) over my displeasure of these officers and to inform her that I don’t want them. Yes, I don’t want them in Linda,” he said.
Efforts to get Inspector- General of police Stella Libongani failed by press time.
