Solwezi man hangs himself, boy drowns

—A 65-year-old man of Nyoka village in senior chief Kasempa’s area in Kasempa district has committed suicide after word went round the village that he was practicing witchcraft.

 

North-western Province Deputy Police Commissioner, Michael Nkaka, confirmed the incident to ZANIS in Solwezi today.

 

Mr Nkaka said Simon Mwalabanya hanged himself to a tree using a wire in a nearby bush following accusations that he was involved in witchcraft.

 

He said police have since advised relatives of the deceased to bury the body after investigations revealed that there was no foul play.

 

Meanwhile, a 16-year-old boy of Mitikutuku Primar School in Solwezi yesterday drowned after the canoe he was in with two other boys capsized on the Mitukutuku dam.

 

North-western Province Deputy Police Commissioner, Michael Nkaka, who confirmed the incident to ZANIS today, said the matter was reported to police in Solwezi yesterday by one of the boys who survived.

 

Mr Nkanka said the two boys survived after they managed to swim to the banks of the dam.

 

He said police are still searching for the body of the deceased.
