Fr. Michelo praises govt’s stance on education

Pemba, September 20th, 2014, ZANIS —–  A catholic Jesuit Priest has praised government for providing an enabling environment for the church to exercise its educational initiatives in addressing the plight of children not in school.

Father Kelly Michelo, a parish priest for Chikuni mission, says it is pleasing to see that government  has the same passion as the church in enhancing education for all, particularly the vulnerable children.

Fr. Michelo said this yesterday in Pemba district during the official opening of a1x2 classroom block at Michelo Interactive Radio instruction (IRI) center commonly known as ‘Learning at Taonga market’ which was built at a cost of K150million donated by a Germany organisation called Kindernothilfe (KNH).

Fr. Michelo said the Jesuits sourced out funds for the construction of the center having seen the plight of children who were learning under a tree in unbearable conditions.

He disclosed that so far eighteen Taonga centers have been set up since year 2000 when the program was piloted in partnership with Educational Development Center through the Ministry of Education.

“Although ‘Learning at Taonga Market Program’ is an informal education where children do not necessarily learn in an informal structure, it has yielded good results as some children are able to complete and further their education,”

“I am proud to announce to you that that one of the products of Taonga program has been sponsored by government to Namibia as a mentor in vegetable growing.” he disclosed.

He called for continued support by government in terms of material provision especially with the new curriculum which he said needed to be translated in IRI method.

And in gracing the event as guest of honour, Director of Distance Education and Open Learning under the Ministry of education Rhoda Mweetwa thanked the Jesuits for their valuable contribution to the education drive throughout Zambia.

Mrs Mwetwa said her Ministry would give all the fundamental support needed to sustain the goals of the Taonga project.
