—–Solwezi District Commissioner, Chrispin Likando, says government attaches great importance to the transport sector as it is the engine of development.

Mr Likando said this is evidenced by the robust road programmes being undertaken by government countrywide.

The District Commissioner cited the pave Zambia 2000, Link Zambia 8000 and the upgrading of urban gravel roads as some of the projects aimed at enhancing the transport sector.

Mr Likando said this in Solwezi yesterday when he officiated at the launch of the commuter awareness booklet by the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC).

Meanwhile the District Commissioner has commended the CCPC for its efforts to sensitise commuters and public bus operators on their rights.

Mr Likando noted that a lot of consumers of public transport services have continued suffering harassment from unscrupulous bus operators leading to loss of money and luggage in some cases.

And CCPC Commissioner, Andrew Musukwa, said the commission has continued receiving an escalating number of complaints of unfair trading practices against some bus operators.

Mr Musukwa, however, expressed optimism that the launch of the commuter awareness booklet will help educate commuters on how to protect themselves against being violated.

He said the commission is also hopeful that bus operators will also understand what the law stipulates on their business operations and what is expected of them.
