The Zimbabwe Football Association have approached Zambia with a proposal to co-host the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations which Zimbabwe are considering bidding for.
Reports in Zimbabwe suggest that Zifa Chief Executive Officer Jonathan Mashingaidze and Zimbabwe Tourism Authority chief Karikoga Kaseke were in Zambia to sell their idea hoping to attract the Zambians into their project.
Mashingaidze met the secretary general of the Football Association of Zambia George Kasengele while Kaseke met the tourist authorities to impress on the benefits of co-hosting.
“We are exploring every avenue to make sure we bring the tournament here. I was in Zambia to discuss the possibility of co-hosting. They are looking at our proposal and we are waiting for their response,” says Mashingaidze.
Ironically Zambia have placed their bid for the 2019 tournament and a CAF inspection team has already visited the country.
Zimbabwe wants to step in place of Libya who have withdrawn from hosting the 2017 Nations Cup due to lack of progress on stadia upgrading as a result of continued fighting in that country.
The Confederation of African Football have given the prospective hosts until September 30 to submit their bids.
Apart from Zimbabwe, Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda have also expressed an interest in hosting the tournament.
