— President Sata to open parliament tomorrow

President Micheal Sata will officially open the Fourth session of the eleventh National Assembly which adjourned Sine Die on July 23 tomorrow , 19th  September, 2014.

 

As per tradition President Michael Sata will use the occasion in the House to set out his policy priorities for the coming one year.

 

ZANIS reports that  this is contained in a statement made available in Lusaka today by Parliamentary Media Liaison Officer Mathew Mukelabai.

 

Mr. Mukelabai said that Members of Parliament (MP) will be accorded the opportunity to debate the policy statements contained in the president’s speech in the next two weeks.

 

He said following the six by-elections that took place, the house is expected to administer Oaths of Allegiance to the newly elected MPs.

 

He named the newbie’s for the Patriotic Front (PF) in the house, as Mr. Rodgers Lingweshi for Mangango constituency Mr. Davies Chisopa for Mkushi South, Christabel Ngimbu, Zambezi West and Margaret Miti for Vubwi Constituencies.

 

Mr. Mukelabai added that the house will also welcome opposition members Dawson Kafwaya and Ms. Victoria Kalima for Solwezi Central and Kasenengwa constituencies, respectively.

 

Mr. Kafwaya won the September 11th, 2014 by-elections for Solwezi Central while Ms Kalima returned her Kasenengwa under the Movement for Multi-party Democracy (MMD) ticket.

 

During the last session the house sat for twenty-one days during which main business of the house was the consideration of the various reports of parliamentary committees.

 

The last sitting saw the house transacting 275 questions for oral answer and questions for written answer and debated nineteen motions to adopt annual parliamentary committee reports.

 

Consequentially, nine ministerial statements were made to the house while forty –two papers comprising nineteen parliamentary committee reports were laid on the table.
