Results from the five parliamentary by-elections held yesterday have been received with mixed feelings.
The ruling PF has scooped Mkushi South, Vubwi and Zambezi West seats while the UPND got the Solwezi Central and MMD won the Kasenengwa seat with the largest margin. PF’s Matero Member of Parliament Miles Sampa, who coordinated campaigns for the ruling party in Vubwi and Kasenengwa, told Mano News that the results prove those who claim that the PF is a party for Bemba speaking people wrong. Mr Sampa, who is also PF chairperson for commerce, added that the PF is a party for all Zambians and accepted by all. But speaking to Mano News today, MMD’s Chipangali MP Vincent Mwale has charged that the Kasenengwa parliamentary by-election result is a sign of lack of confidence in the PF by the electorates. Mr Mwale stated that the people of Kasenengwa feel disappointed with the PF government’s agricultural policies.

Movement for Multi-Party Democracy–MMD’s, Victoria Kalima has bounced back as Kasenengwa Member of Parliament. Ms. Kalima polled 10,936 votes to beat her closest rival for PF, Patriotic Front Party Gideon Zulu who polled 3,484 votes. And UPND, United Party for National Development candidate, Timothy Kafa Nyirenda collected 439 votes. United National Independence Party UNIP candidate, Khumbiza Daka settled for the last position with only 280 votes. And the ruling PF has won the Vubwi parliamentary seat. PF candidate, Margret Miti polled 3,797 votes while MMD’s Eustakio Kazonga polled 1,091 votes, and UPND’s Alfonso Phiri got 761 votes.

In Zambezi West, PF’s Cristabel Njimbu has been declared winner after she polled 3, 420 votes beating her closest rival Charles Kakoma who got 1, 173 votes. And the UPND’s Dawson Kafwaya polled 4, 755 to win the Solwezi central beating PF’s Newton Malwa who had 3, 105 while the MMD’s Lucky Mulusa got 1, 897. Meanwhile, in Mkushi South, the PF’s Davies Chisopa is the new area MP after polling 2, 268 while MMD’s Sydney Chisanga had 1,344 and the UPND’s candidate Agness Mambwe got 1, 012 votes.

And the United Party for National Development (UPND) has scooped the Solwezi Central Constituency parliamentary seat. This was when not more than 10,000 out of the 52,900 registered voters turned up to cast their votes in the Solwezi polls. Electoral Commission of Zambia Returning officer Sarah Lunda declared UPND’s Candidate Dawson Kafwaya as the dully elected Member of Parliament for Solwezi at the Civic Centre at about 03:05 Zambian time. Kafwaya polled 4,577 votes beating his closed rival Newton Malwa of the patriotic front who polled 3105 while MMD’s Lucky Mulusa failed to return his seat has he only managed to finish 3rd with 1,897 votes from the 30 polling Stations.

  1. That’s what it is when you start behaving like you are already in state house. Some opposition leaders are so arrogant, they have this know it all attitude! When on poddium, they have absolutely no constructive massage for the people other than to say what wrongs the party in power had done. Now the results have come splushing on their faces and they want to find scapegoat ! This is theatrical !
