FODEP happy with peaceful campaigns

Lusaka, September 8, ZANIS —The Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP) has commended political parties and other stakeholders for maintaining peace and order throughout the campaigns in the forthcoming five parliamentary by-elections.

FODEP Executive Director MacDonald Chipenzi said the prevailing peace does not mean there is no political provocation but is as a result of restraint, tolerance and discipline that political parties, their supporters and other players have exhibited towards each other.

Mr Chipenzi said FODEP is hopeful that the prevailing peace in the five constituencies in Mkushi South, Solwezi Central, Zambezi West, Vubwi and Kasenengwa will continue to prevail and dominate the electoral process during and after the September 11polls.

He said FODEP will monitor all the by-elections by deploying stationary and roving monitors in selected polling stations and will continue to keenly follow the process up to the end.

The FODEP Executive Director said this in a statement obtained by ZANIS in Lusaka today.

Meanwhile, Mr Chipenzi stressed that reports of issuance of National Registration Cards (NRC) in Zambezi District to former Angola Refugees by the Ministry of Homes Affairs are likely to cause electoral confrontation ahead of the by-elections in Zambezi West Constituency.

He said FODEP is greatly concerned and disturbed with the alleged activities especially that they are from a sensitive Ministry in charge of internal security and is pursuing a provocative path by carelessly issuing NRCs.

Mr Chipenzi has since called for the immediate suspension of the alleged issuance of NRCs to Angolan Refugees to avoid electoral conflict in the district until after the September 11 vote.
