Govt ponders criminalizing casualization

Solwezi, 5 September, 2014, ZANIS……Government says it will now consider criminalizing casualization of workers due to continued flouting of labour laws by employers.

Labour Minister Fackson Shamenda says the current situation where employers are allowed to go scot free over casualisation of labour will soon be a thing of the past.

Speaking when he addressed management at Kansanshi mine yesterday, Mr Shamenda said government will soon outlaw casualisation in a bid to protect workers from being abused by some investors.

Mr Shamenda said this is the only way industrial harmony can be achieved to maximize productivity in the country.

And Mr Shamenda has urged Kansanshi mine to quickly resolve outstanding labour issues at the company to avoid industrial unrest at the mining firm.

Meanwhile, the labour minister says the new labour laws that government will soon introduce will give workers rights to speak against injustices at places of work without fear of being victimized by employers.

And First Quantum Minerals Chairman Kingsley Chinkuli told Mr Shamenda that Kansanshi Mine will continue to engage government on various labour issues to ensure an amicable solution is reached.
