ZP heightens peaceful election sensitization

Solwezi, September 2, 2014, ZANIS…..The Zambia Police Service has intensified voter education and sensitization campaigns ahead of the September 11 Solwezi central constituency by – election.

The Police Service is using its theatre group to educate voters to conduct themselves in a peaceful manner ahead of the polls.

Deputy Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga told ZANIS in Solwezi today that the Service has partnered with the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to sensitize citizens because political violence has the potential to create anarchy if left unchecked.

Mr Hamoonga said the Zambia Police is equally concerned about the escalating levels of intolerance among political players which in most cases has ended up in violence and loss of lives.

He said there was need for all players in the electoral process to take their role in promoting peace during the campaign period and beyond.

The sensitization campaigns are focusing on the need for citizens to refrain from electoral malpractice and violence.

The group has so far been to Kasenengwa and Vubwi parliamentary constituencies in the Eastern province and are now in Solwezi central in the North Western province where by- elections will take place on September 11.

The by- election comes after the Supreme court nullified the election of Lucky Mulusa on grounds of electoral malpractice.

Five candidates are vying for the Solwezi Central parliamentary seat and include Newton Malwa of the ruling Patriotic Front, Lucky Mulusa of the MMD, Dawson Kafwaya of the UPND, FDDs Nathan Mulonga and Mary Katiki of UNIP.
