ZAMBIA was yesterday barred from taking part in the Confederation of Southern Africa School Sports Association (COSASSA) ball games on suspicion of age cheating.
After putting up a good performance in the games that started on Thursday at the Olympic Youth Development Centre (OYDC), organisers became suspicious of Zambia’s performance before age cheating allegations were brought in.
This prompted the organisers to bar Zambia from competing in the games yesterday to pave way for investigations and a meeting was by press time underway to decide the fate of the host nation.
COSASSA publicity secretary Eagile Molelo in an interview yesterday confirmed that allegations of age cheating were brought against Zambia but could not give an official statement until when the meeting was over.
“It is true Zambia have been accused of age cheating and as I speak a meeting is under way to decide their fate but for now they are still in the competition despite not competing today,” Molelo said.
Meanwhile, the Zambian Under-17 basketball girl’s team beat Botswana 45-20 while the boys tumbled narrowly 31-29 to Botswana.
The Zimbabwean boy’s and girls’ teams lost to Namibia 56-39 and 46-34 respectively.
In football, Zambia beat Botswana 2-0 while before the latter held Namibia to a 1-all draw for both girls and boys team in the under 13 category.
The Zimbabwe Under-13 boys tumbled 2-0 to Botswana while the Botswana Under -17 beat Namibia 3-0.
In the Under-13 netball, Zambia beat Botswana 29-19 but Tswana’s Under-17 side proved too good for the hosts winning 41-50.
Namibia were by press time topping the tennis standing with seven points followed by Botswana on three points while Zambia has two points. The volleyball team beat Zimbabwe 3-0 but the girl’s team lost 3-1.
