LUSAKA, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) — Zambian President Michael Sata has fired Minister of Justice Wynter Kabimba and revoked him as secretary general of the ruling party Patriotic Front (PF), according to a statement released to media on Thursday by the presidential office.
The presidential office made the announcement in a statement on Facebook, and released the statement to local media.
Defense Minister Edgar Lungu will take over Kabimba’s roles as Justice Minister and Secretary-general of the ruling PF, in addition to his portfolio as Minister of Defense.
Sata, 77, has missed several international engagements and has not been seen in public since June 19, with speculations rife that he was not well.
Last week, he missed the U.S.-Africa Summit called by U.S. President Barack Obama while he has failed to officiate at important events locally, with his vice filling the gap.
Opposition political parties and other stakeholders have been pressing the government to tell the nation Sata’s state of health although the government has insisted that he was fine.
Early this month, First Lady Christine Kaseba-Sata said the Zambian leader was well and working at State House.
