The Lusaka Rugby club will this Saturday and Sunday host the David Phiri Club Rugby challenge in Lusaka.

Lusaka Rugby Club Secretary, Cecilia Thresha, disclosed at a press briefing at Lusaka Ruby Club in Lusaka August 28th  that 16 teams have confirmed participation in the tournament, with four teams from outside Zambia and 12 from Zambia.

Thresha said the first team expected to arrive August 29th at 09:00hrs at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport are the Dar-es-Salaam Leopards of Tanzania while the rest are expected to travel by road.

She said as of August 28th  they had met their budget set for K120 000, with a sum total of K30 000 set aside as prize money and K90 000 for organising.

Thresha stated that there are three main categorise for the tournament with first being the Owen Busange cup which will be given to the overall winners, the second as the Bwalya Kapasa and the third being the Mwango Katema plate which will be given to the player of the tournament.

She said the categories are named after the late coach, Owen Busange, and two players, Bwalya Kapasa and Mwango Katema, respectively.

Thresha said it is the third year that the tournament is being called the David Phiri Lusaka challenge after the first black president who served for 40 years and died in 2012.

She noted that this year’s tournament will be bigger than last year’s with teams from across the border.

Thresha urged all funs to turn out in numbers and experience the best of rugby as it is the only tournament in Lusaka.
