—-Government says the successful implementation of the community based disaster risk management facilitation manual will help to reduce disaster risks in the country.

Speaking during the official launch of the community based disaster risk management facilitation manual in Chirundu district, Deputy Minister in the Office of the Vice President, Davis Mwango, said the engagement of the community in disaster risk management is essential in reducing their vulnerability.

Mr Mwango said communities should be able to identify, analyse, monitor and evaluate disasters caused by climate change.

He said every Zambian is entitled to a decent and dignified life hence the call for community participation in disaster risk management.

The Deputy Minister said the disaster risk management manual will empower local communities to respond timely in an event disaster strikes.

Mr Mwango said the establishment of district satellite disaster management committees will be used as an entry point for all disaster risk management initiatives throughout the county.

He directed the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) to ensure that the programme is owned by the community.

Mr Mwango said his office will provide resources to strengthen the capacity of the district satellite disaster management committee.

And speaking earlier at the same function, Chirundu District Commissioner, Peggy Nyirenda, said the district was pleased to host the training workshop.

Mrs Nyirenda said the implementation of the disaster risk manual will enable the district to respond according to disasters.
