DC stands-by DMMU relief maize exercise

Kalabo, August 12, 2014, ZANIS…………Kalabo District Commissioner Masela Chinyama has refuted allegations  that the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) was distributing relief maize in Buleya ward where  campaigns are underway for a local government by-election.

Mrs Chinyama explained that a list of beneficiaries of relief food under the Home – Based Care programme  handled by the department of Social Welfare was drawn long before the by-election adding that  there was no need for anybody to raise an issue.

She further disclosed that Buleya was Ward was not on the list of areas to benefit from relief maize in the district.

“Those are pure speculations, there is nobody distributing any maize in Buleya as far as I am concerned, the program of distributing relief maize was drawn long before the by- election, ” Mrs Chinyama said.

The District commissioner was reacting to speculations from some section of society in Kalabo district  alleging that the DMMU was distributing relief maize in Buleya Ward where a by-election was underway.

And Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has expressed ignorance about the development.

District Electoral Officer Milly  Muluti told ZANIS in an interview that the commission had not yet received an official complaint from the concerned parties on the matter.

And campaigns in the ward are going on smoothly so far with only seven days to go before voting on August 19th .

The Buleya ward seat fell vacant after United Party for National Development (UPND) Councilor Oliver Mandumbwa resigned to join the civil service.
