—–Six political parties have expressed interest in contesting the forthcoming Solwezi Central Constituency by election slated for September 11, 2014.

The six are the Patriotic Front (PF), United Party for National Development (UPND), Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD), United National Independence Party (UNIP), Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) and the National Restoration Party (NAREP).

This came to light during the nomination briefing for aspiring candidates held in Solwezi today.

Speaking when he addressed members of the six political parties, Electoral Commission of Zambia Principal Electoral Officer, Stephen Nyondo, called on political parties to exercise maximum restraint during the election period.

Mr Nyondo said political party leaders should caution their cadres to desist from being confrontational in order to avoid violence.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has set August 12, 2014 as nomination day and September 11 as poll day for the Solwezi Central and Zambezi West Constituencies by elections respectively.

The two seats fell vacant after the Supreme Court nullified the election of Lucky Mulusa for Solwezi Central and Charles Kakoma for Zambezi West on grounds of electoral malpractices.
