VICE-President Dr Guy Scott says the government has no intentions of restricting Zambia’s 50th anniversary celebrations to the PF.
Speaking in Parliament after he delivered a statement on preparations for the golden jubilee independence celebrations on Thursday, Vice-President Scott (right) said every Zambian was free to join in the celebrations.
Mazabuka UPND member of parliament Garry Nkombo asked Vice-President Scott if opposition members were guaranteed of safety during the celebrations since 50 years was a milestone and that it was something worth celebrating.
“We have no intentions of making these celebrations for just one party. We have no intentions of committing any human rights abuses,” Vice-President Scott said.
Sinda MMD member of parliament Levy Ngoma asked how many heads of state would attend Zambia’s 50th anniversary celebrations since according to him, most heads of state had continued to shun Zambia’s big events.
In response, Vice-President Scott said it was not true that heads of state from other countries were shunning most of Zambia’s big events, saying Zambia has had no events like the 50th anniversary.
“No one has shunned Zambia. We have had no events of this magnitude before. You don’t spend your life as a president running around. I have spoken to several heads of state who have reassured me of visiting during the celebrations,” he said.
Vice-President Scott said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had sent invitations to other countries in the SADC region to attend Zambia’s golden jubilee celebrations.
