Electoral Commission to set polls date

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) will early next week announce the date on which to hold the pending parliamentary by-elections following the Supreme Court’s landmark judgment allowing former Members of Parliament who had their elections nullified to recontest their seats.

ECZ Chairperson Irene Mambilima notes that in view of the Court’s decision, the commission will allow the former MPs to recontest their seats.

Justice Mambilima says the commission is obliged to follow the interpretation of the law by the Courts.

She has however stated that the commission will not hold by-elections in Malambo, Mulobezi and Petauke central constituencies until the matter pertaining to holding of the said by-elections is determined by the Supreme Court.

The ECZ chairperson was speaking this afternoon in Lusaka during the ECZ media luncheon on the forthcoming delimitation exercise.

Meanwhile Justice Mambilima has challenged the media to take a keen interest in the delimitation exercise of polling districts and wards that will take effect during the 2016 general elections.

Justice Mambilima says this is why despite holding two other briefings on the forthcoming delimitation exercise for stakeholder where the media was equally invited, the commission has also deemed it fit to hold a separate briefing for the media because the media is a key stakeholder in the electoral process.

She has also disclosed that the timetable of the delimitation sittings in the districts will be publicized in print media and will be available at the respective district offices.
