Fish trader dies in Lake Bangweulu  accident

Luwingu, July 1 2014, ZANIS – A 50 year old man of Kamishitu village in chief Chabula area of Luwingu district in Northern Province has died after a canoe he was traveling in capsized on Lake Bangweulu.

Three other people who were also travelling on the same canoe however survived.

Bwalinde ward councilor Tresphord Chisala Mubanga disclosed to ZANIS in Luwingu that Francis Chanda  died on Sunday after his canoe capsized following a heavy current.

He however said the body of the deceased was retrieved from the lake four hours later after the accident had occurred.

Mr Chisala said the late Chanda met his fate as he was coming back from where he went to buy fish for sale on the Lake Bangweulu a few meters away from reaching the main land near Chabu Musanshi village in the same chiefdom.

The councilor said that at the time of the accident Chanda had bought fish worth thousands of kwacha for sale but it was also lost in the accident.

Mr Chisala said the matter has not yet been reported to police adding that burial of the deceased will be done without a police report.

Meanwhile, Mr Chisala said the three who managed to swim to the banks of the lake reported the incident to the relatives of the deceased.
