Civil Society Organizations in Zambia have launched an Alliance aimed enhancing civic and Voter Education ahead of the 2016 tripartite elections.

The Zambia Electoral Alliance (ZEA) is comprised of SACCORD, Anti-Voter Apathy (AVAP), Media Institute for Southern Africa (MISA), Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP) and the Zambia National Women’s Lobby (ZNWL).

Speaking during the unveiling of the alliance at a media briefing in Lusaka today, Alliance Chairperson Juliet Chibuta explained that the ZEA is inspired by the holding of free, fair, credible and peaceful elections that will allow Zambians grow their democracy.

Ms. Chibuta says the Alliance will do this through conducting civic and voter Education and election Monitoring.

She adds that the Zambia Electoral Alliance’s objective is to contribute towards the attainment of free, fair, credible and peaceful elections in Zambia.

She pointed out that the alliance is non-partisan.

Ms. Chibuta states that in order to address some of the challenges in the electoral process in the country, the Alliance will embark on nationwide sensitization activities while also advocating for reforms to the electoral Laws that are undemocratic and hinder citizen’s active participation in the electoral process.

And FODEP Executive Director McDonald Chipenzi expressed optimism that the launch of Alliance will further strengthen Zambia’s electoral credentials.
