THREE  prospective South African mining firms have commenced extensive  manganese exploration in Luapula Province to tap the mineral for export.
Mines, Energy and Water Development Minister Christopher Yaluma said the three firms were currently exploring additional deposits of manganese and later consider prospects of setting up a refinery plant to promote large-scale mining.
“About three companies from South Africa have ventured into manganese exploration in Luapula with the possibility of setting up a refinery to support large-scale mining,” he said.
Mr Yaluma said Government would expedite construction of the 300 Kilo Volts(Kv) Pensulo power line to provide adequate electricity to Luapula that will boost large-scale manganese mining in the region.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Mines, Energy and Water Development has commenced the process of assessing small-scale mining plots in order to establish means of attracting investment in the sector.
Deputy Minister, Richard Musukwa said the move was being implemented with particular emphasis on manganese mining in Luapula.
“Government is aware of what is happening in Luapula Province with regard to manganese mining and we have embarked on a programme to empower Zambians to participate in the mining of the resource,” he said.
Mr Musukwa said during the ongoing Indaba on mining in Ndola that, Government  has prioritised the manganese mining sector because it had the potential to contribute to economic development and wealth creation.
“This is by encouraging and facilitating orderly and sustainable development of small-scale mining. Therefore, I urge small-scale miners to cooperate and be compliant with all regulations,” Mr Musukwa said.
