The Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) has approved 53 projects after reviewing submitted Environmental Impact Assessment reports.

One of the approved projects is the US$355 million Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), Lusaka Water Supply, sanitation and drainage project, aimed at rehabilitating water and sewer infrastructure in Lusaka.

Other approved projects are Proposed Brentwood Housing Complex in New Kasama, Lusaka district, Unicorn Villas-Housing development project in Ibex Hill, Lusaka, proposed Construction of Royal Gibson Hotel in Kitwe, proposed Cement and Lime plant project in Lusaka by Mpande Limestone Limited and the proposed concrete Batching plant at University of Zambia by AVIC International Limited among other projects.

ZEMA has meanwhile rejected the proposed Establishment of Borrow Pits on Kitwe-Chingola Road in Kitwe, Kalulushi and Chingola by SINOHYDRO Zambia Limited on grounds that the developer prepared one Environmental Project Brief (EPB) for several borrow pits for different sites.

The developer has since been advised to submit separate Environmental Project Briefs for the borrow pits that are located more than 5km apart.

And ZEMA Principal Information and Communication officer Irene Chipili says all the projects have been approved subject to conditions and have to start being implemented within three years.

Ms Chipili says ZEMA’s decision can be withdrawn without notice should a developer fail to comply with laid down conditions and commitments.

She also reminded all industries of their corporate social responsibility of ensuring that environmental and social concerns are fully incorporated into their overall operational regimes.
