ZAMBIA’S tennis ace, Edgar Kazembe on Monday blazed into the second round of the 2014 Kenya Open Championships in Nairobi after beating Kenyan, Shivam Shah in two straight sets.
Kazembe, the 2012 champion, faced little opposition as he dispatched Shah 6-1, 6-2 to book a date with another Kenyan, Allan Saha Atola in the second round.
For him to storm the second round, Atola was stretched to the limit before bundling out Tanzanian, Charles Stevens 6-3, 2-6, 7-5.
Luck was however, not on Zambia’s other player, Chilito Zulu as he bowed out at the first hurdle, losing 2-6, 2-6 to Jamin Luvembe of Kenya.
Defending champion, Duncan Mugabe of Uganda, who despite arriving for his match two hours late, showed no fatigue as he rolled over Zachariah Keru of Kenya 6-1, 6-0 to qualify to the second round where he was scheduled to Burundi’s Saidi Nkurunziza.
According to Kenyan media reports, Nkurunziza struggled to beat Zimbabwean Hillary Nyakabau 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.
Last year’s losing finalist, Jean Claude Gasigwa of Rwanda also won his match against compatriot Henry Ayesiga 6-2, 7-6(3) to reach the second round where he was scheduled to face Luvembe yesterday
