Two quick-fire first half goals from Ronald Kampamba and Evans Kangwa helped Nkana to a 2-0 win against Zanaco in a rescheduled week five match played at Nkana Stadium on Wednesday to extend their unbeaten run in the 2014 MTN FAZ Super League to nine matches.

The league champions had struggled to break down a solid Zanaco defence in the opening half hour but Kampamba was well placed to beat Allan Chibwe in goal for Zanaco with a powerful low shot in the 38th minute.

A minute later Kampamba turned provider as Evans Kangwa increased the hosts’ advantage from a follow up after his initial effort was saved by Chibwe.

Nkana had chances to increase the score-line in the second half but Derrick Mwansa missed a penalty ten minutes after the restart. Ronald Kampamba and Claude Bwalya had a goal each ruled out for offside by the officials.

The victory moved Nkana to seventh position with 17 points from nine matches, 12 adrift of Zanaco who play Power Dynamos next.
The loss was Zanaco’s second and comes on the back of their defeat at home to Zesco United four days ago.

Zanaco head coach Aggrey Chiyangi refused to admit that his team’s position at the top of the sandings had been threatened by two back to back defeats.

“Winning the league is not about beating Nkana, Zesco United or Power Dynamos; It is about beating the other teams. Today we have lost but we are looking forward to the next game.

Chiyangi added that his side controlled the match in the first half but his players’ attitude was not right for them to register a win.

“They are hurt by this defeat. I know my players, they will come back and give us a win,” he said.

And Nkana coach Zeddy Saileti whose side has four matches in hand over Zanaco described the win as important.

“We wanted this win so much and the players worked hard for it. We were patient, we knew that it was going to be a tough match but the way we remained focused. The key for us is to remain focussed in all our upcoming matches,” he said.

Nkana face Red Arrows in their next match to be followed by a midweek rescheduled fixture at Nakambala Leopards.
