— Government has advised maize buyers to apply the rule of first come, first serve during the 2014 maize marketing season.

Katete District Commissioner Colonel Peter Kunda Kaisa has for this reason appealed to all buyers to guard against corruption, nepotism and other vices as they serve the farmers.

Colonel Kaisa has noted that buyers should be wary of all factors that should be considered such as the moisture content, good grade among many others.

The District Commissioner said this when he officially opened the 2014 maize crop marketing season and training workshop for satellite depot clerks, quantity and commodity checkers at the Food Reserve Agency main shed ,in Katete District today.

He said government recognizes the important role satellite depot clerks and commodity checkers play in the marketing of maize and other crops in order to uphold the required quality of the maize purchased.

He noted that in Katete District the opening of the maize marketing season had delayed due to the high moisture content of maize recorded in many places of the district.

He added that that maize bought with high moisture content has high chances of getting rotten and discolored when stored.

The Food Reserve Agency will buy a total of 306, 000 × 50 Kgs bags of maize from the 19 satellite depots dotted across the district.
