—- District in Central province has received 2,400x50kg bags of basal dressing fertilizer for 2014/15 farming season.

Serenje District Commissioner, Charles Mwelwa, confirmed the development to ZANIS in an Interview.

Mr Mwelwa said he was happy that government has lived up to its promise to start delivering farming inputs for the 2014/15 farming season.

“We have seen that what government promised on farming input has happened. This is just the beginning of June and the fertilizer has started coming,” Mr Mwelwa said.

Mr Mwelwa said the development is an indication that government attaches great importance to crop production.

And Mr Mwelwa has advised farmers in the district not to sell their maize to private buyers but exercise patience and wait for Food Reserve Agency to start buying the maize after the price has been announced.

The District Commissioner warned that farmers selling their maize to private buyers risk being swindled.

“There is a lot of desperation by farmers in the district. They are selling maize at K55,000 and it is this desperation that leads to them being swindled.

“I appeal to farmers not to waste their yield but wait for FRA and avoid being swindled,” the District Commissioner said.
