Govt. revamps  ‘ idle’ Kalungwishi Cattle Ranch in Mporokoso

Mporokoso, June 12, 2014, ZANIS —- Government has revamped the Kalungwishi Cattle Ranch in Mporokoso district in Northern Province.

Provincial Veterinary Officer Dr. Muzumbwe Kanemanema says government has revived the operations of the economically viable ranch to full capacity.

He said the revamping of operations at the ranch will greatly benefit local farmers in the area.

ZANIS reports that the Provincial Veterinary officer said this in an interview after delivering 52 heads of cattle for restocking the ranch, today.

Dr. Kanemanema stated that government was keen to ensuring that cattle rearing were enhanced in all parts of Zambia.

He added that government planned to make Kalungwishi a breeding center of cattle in Northern Province.

And farm manager Henry Mwindilila commended the government for restocking Kalungwishi, saying the ranch will provide a cheaper market of cattle for local farmers once fully revamped.

Mr. Mwindilila however bemoaned encroachments on the ranch and has for this reason appealed to relevant authorities to address the matter.

The ranch has been revived with support from the Ministry of Agriculture and the Provincial Administration in the Province.

Kalungwishi Cattle ranch is in Mporokoso and has 46,000 hectares of pasture land.

Once fully developed, the ranch can accommodate thousands of animals. The ranch remained idle for nearly two decades.
