Cooperatives in Kawambwa urged to unite and construct a storage slab

Kawambwa , June 11, 2014, ZANIS —- The Food Reserve Agency (FRA ) in Kawambwa district has called for construction of a slab for the enhancement of maize storage during the marketing season.

FRA Kawambwa district marketing assistant, Thomson Mbuzi says that since there is high farm produce in the district, a permanent slab is needed to safeguard the produce.

He emphasizes that government does  not want to grain of maize to go to waste hence  the need for the cooperatives to unite and build a slab.

Mr Mbuzi says putting up a shed is urgent and an important project which should be embraced by all farmers and must be treated with urgency.

However, he says cooperatives might think time is too short but something should be done for safe keeping of maize when the marketing season begins.

ZANIS reports that the District FRA marketing assistant said this during a meeting with cooperatives in Kawambwa District, today.

During the discussions, many cooperative leaders welcomed the project
But observe there is little time to build a slab suggesting the
project should have started a month ago for it to be done properly.

At the same meeting, Kawambwa District Commissioner, Ivo Mpasa advises the cooperative leaders to urgently form a committee to spearhead the construction of a slab.

Last year, Kawambwa central produced 53,000 x 50 kg bags of white maize  but lack of adequate storage facilities is threatening the produce.
