Solwezi district commissioner Crispin Likando has called on farmers in the area  to take advantage of the high demand for horticultural crops and scale up their production.

Mr Likando said there is currently a high demand for horticultural crops as a result of the expanded population in the district.

Mr Likando said local farmers already have a readily available market for their crops that has been brought by mining activities taking place in the district.

He said the mines have created a huge market for agricultural produce that farmers need to be exploited.

Mr Likando was speaking in Solwezi yesterday when he opened the 53rd Solwezi district agricultural, industrial and commercial show whose theme is breaking new grounds.

He said the theme calls on farmers to be bold enough and adopt new technologies that will enable them position themselves in the production value chain.

Meanwhile, Mr Likando disclosed that the district has so far received 204 metric tones of D compound fertilizer out of the expected 1,265 metric tons for the 2014/2015 farming season.

Speaking earlier District show society chairperson Kenneth Kangomo said the society is facing financial challenges that are making it difficult for the society to look after farmers welfare.
