Napsa Stars coach Hector Chilombo has insisted that his team is in contention for the league title following a 2 – 0 victory over Nchanga Rangers in a week 9 match played at Woodlands Stadium on Saturday.

A 53rd minute White Mwanambaba penalty and a 77th minute header by Zambia U-20 forward Saith Sakala saw Chilombo’s side move from fourth into second place level on 18 points with Zesco United who were relegated into third place on goal difference after they lost away to Green Eagles.

Bonwell Mwape missed a penalty as he saw his effort come off the woodwork in the 63rd minute. Napsa Stars played the last minutes of the match with 10 men as they had Boyd Mkandawaire sent off for a second booking. Napsa Stars assistant coach Evans Sakala was also sent to the stands.

“We are playing well and our position on the standings is testimony to that. We are in contention for the title and I believe that we can win the league this season,” Chilombo said in a post-match interview.

Napsa Stars are a point adrift of leaders Power Dynamos and travel a short distance to Imboela Stadium where they face city rivals Green Buffaloes next.

In Choma, Paul Malama scored twice and Mateyo Ndashe contributed a goal as Green Eagles brushed aside Zesco United 3-1 at Independence Stadium. The win was the first recorded by the Eagles at home this season.

Another first win was recorded away from home by Kabwe Warriors who defeated Nakambala Leopards 1-0 thanks to Brian Mwila’s headed goal following a corner.

At Konkola Stadium, Elson Mkandawire scored his second brace in the space of seven days as Konkola Blades came from behind to win 2-1 against Green Buffaloes. Felix Katongo had opened the scoring for the vistors in the 44th minute only for Mkandawire to equalise in the 53rd minute. Mkandawire completed his brace in the 78th minute that lifted the Chililabombwe based side into fifth with 15 points.

At Kafubu Stadium, the match between Roan United and Red Arrows was abandoned in additional time because fans threw objects on the field play. Red Arrows were leading 1 – 0 by a goal scored by Adubelo Phiri.

Leaders Power Dynamos played out a goalless draw against National Assembly.

League action continues on Sunday with Zanaco hosting Indeni at Sunset Stadium. Zanaco will go to the top of the standings with a win.
