Zambian delegation to monitor Malawi polls

AN 11-member Zambian delegation is in Malawi to observe elections under the auspices of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Electoral Observer Mission.

The delegates, who arrived in Malawi on Sunday, are expected to undergo training together with their counterparts from other SADC countries before being deployed to different parts of the country.
This is according to a press statement issued yesterday by first secretary for press at the Zambian High Commission in Lilongwe Chansa Kabwela.
Malawi will hold its tripartite elections on May 20, 2014 in which 12 candidates, including incumbent President Joyce Banda, are running for the presidency.
Ms Kabwela said the Zambian delegation yesterday paid a courtesy call on Zambia’s High Commission Charge d’Affaires Henry Ngilazi.
Several advance teams of observer missions such as the European Union and the African Union are already in the country.
Over 1,290 candidates are expected to contest the country’s 193 seats in Parliament.
Malawians will also be electing councillors to represent them at local government level.
The Malawi Electoral Commission has registered 7,531,548 voters for the 2014 elections.
