THE MMD in Eastern Province has accused party president Nevers Mumba and the entire National Executive Committee (NEC) of failing the party.
The provincial executive has also given NEC a 30-day ultimatum  to immediately hold a reconciliation meeting, failure to which the entire NEC will be booted out through an extra-ordinary convention.
This is according to minutes of the Eastern Province Executive Committee attended by district chairpersons on April  5, this year at Pine View Guest House in Chipata.
The 23 leaders, who attended the meeting resolved that the convention should be held to usher in a new NEC and new party president, who will steer the party to victory in the 2016 general elections.
“The meeting found that all NEC members, including the president, have weaknesses. The failure of the party to attract new members must be shouldered by all,” they stated.
The meeting observed that the party secretariat had been ‘too weak,’ which had contributed to poor performance of Dr Mumba and the party in general.
“We know the president has not been effective but calling for his removal without a serious alternative in sight is shooting ourselves in the foot,” they stated.
They complained that due to the infighting in the party, no new members were joining party.
Meanwhile, Zambia  Centre for Inter-Party Dialogue (ZCID) has called for enhanced intra-party dialogue in the MMD as the current wrangles in the former ruling party would be disastrous to the tenets of democracy.
ZCID member Langton Sichone said in an interview that it would be disastrous for the MMD to split in the run up to the 2016 elections as it was a major opposition political party currently.
