The Food Reserve Agency (FRA) has identified 27 slabs in different provinces which will be translated into storage shed by June this year.

FRA Executive Director Chola Kafwabulula, who confirmed the development in an interview with journalists in Lusaka today, said the contract for the construction of the storage sheds has already been signed and that the contractors have since moved on site.

Mr. Kafwabulula said the total storage capacity of the 27 sheds will give the FRA an added storage capacity of 117, 000 metric tonnes.

FRA currently has a storage capacity of 748, 000 metric tonnes.

He said as a result of this development, wastage of maize which has been a challenge for the agency in the recent past will be a thing of the past.

And Mr. Kafwabulula said the food reserve agency was proud that none of the maize it acquired from farmers during the last maize marketing season has gone to waste adding that 99 percent of it has been secured.

“Our maize is secured. You may recall that we have been having rains in the last three to four months but where have you heard of maize going to waste? It has not happened. So we are actually trying to bring back the FRA ship back on course,” he said.

Mr. Kafwabulula said with the new management at FRA, things have tremendously changed at the agency noting that management was keen to ensure that things were done correctly.

“Any stakeholders who want to double check these facts are free to do so. These are public institutions and we do not want to hide anything. In the last one year we have done something that has never been done in the past,” Mr. Kafwabulula said.
