Mkushi DC bemoans HIV/AIDS related deaths in the area

Mkushi , February 27th, 2014, 2014, ZANIS —-Mkushi District Administrative Officer, Lemmy Chibuye has bemoaned the continued high number of  deaths due to the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

Mr. Chibuye says most youths in the area were dying from HIV/AIDS a  scenario he said was threatening development and productivity in the district.

This has as the affected age group is the most productive in the most critical areas of development, such as agriculture, he said.

The DAO said this when he officiated at a two day planning meeting for the District Behaviour Change Communication (BCC) committee at Mariana motel in Mkushi district, today.

The BCC committee is a multi-sectorial group encompassing members from Government departments, Faith Based Organisations and other partner Non-Governmental Organisations in the District.

He urged the members of the BCC to step up efforts in carrying out behavioral change activities in the communities in order to cushion the effects of the HIV/AIDS pandemic and other health challenges in the district.

The DAO further called for the strengthening of social mobilization activities in the communities and coordination of health promotion activities in special settings such as schools, workplaces and hospitals.

Mr.Chibuye also called for a paradigm shift regarding health communication in the communities, as most diseases that affect the masses such as HIV/AIDS, Cholera and Malaria are based on behaviours and attitudes of the people.

The BCC committee in the district, which was set up two years ago focuses on the implementation of IEC and BCC programs in all technical areas of HIV/AIDS, Malaria, child health & nutrition, maternal health and non-communicable diseases.
