LUFWANYAMA district commissioner Alex Kalela has called on investors operating in the area to work closely with Government in setting up social amenities that will help keep young people away from mischief.
“The only entertainment for young people in Lufwanyama district is sex. There are a lot of sex activities among the youths in our district. There are no sports facilities and play parks in Lufwanyama,” he lamented.
Mr Kalela said in an interview early in the week from Lufwanyama that youths must be kept busy with productive activities rather than leave them to misdeeds that adversely affect their lives.
He said his office is concerned by the “high levels” of immorality amongst young people.
Mr Kalela said some youths are forced to indulge in sexual activities because of lack of social amenities in the district.
“We are appealing to the mines and other investors operating in Lufwanyama district to help us in this area. They should do something. The lives of young people are being destroyed because the only thing that is entertaining them is sex. There is nothing else to keep them busy,” Mr Kalela said.
He said Government is committed to ensuring that young people grow into responsible citizens.
“This is why we are building schools everywhere. We want young people to be educated,” he said.
Mr Kalela said Zambia needs an educated cadre of young people that will contribute significantly to the economic growth of the country.
He urged the youths to be focused and desist from indulging in vices that are impacting negatively on their lives.
Mr Kalela reminded the youths that there are several opportunities in life when one is armed with proper academic qualifications.
“I am urging young people in Lufwanyama district to concentrate on studies. This is the time to study and not to play around. There are a lot of opportunities in life when you are educated,” Mr Kalela said.
