FIRE which gutted Choma Secondary School Kitchen in the early hours of today has destroyed property worth millions of kwacha . Operations at the school have since been paralyzed.

School Head teacher Samuel Mudenda said the fire which started around 02 hours is suspected to have been caused by an electrical fault and has burnt to ashes various kitchen equipment and food stuffs.

“Several items were burnt although the total cost has not yet been compiled, 7 electric pots, 193 serving pots, 1 butcher machine, and 207 cabbages, but the school is now organizing alternative means to feed the pupilst”,  said Mr Mudenda.

Mr Mudenda said the School had over 1, 300 pupils in boarding who entirely depended on the kitchen for their meals.

He said the fire was put off by the Choma brigade around 03:30hrs although they arrived after much of it had been quenched by the pupils.  Meanwhile, Choma District Commissioner Bernadette Hamwemba who rushed to the school described the situation as unfortunate and urged the Police to thoroughly investigate the cause of the fire.

Ms Hamweemba said it was unfortunate that fires have continued to destroy property citing the recent incident that happened at Macha and Sikalonga where school kitchens were also gutted.  ” It is important that the cause of these fire is established to deter such future loses  at three different schools within a space of two weeks at the  expense of the normal operations of the school”, she said.

Ms Hamweemba however assured the school authorities of Government’s support to ensure that the unfortunate incidence does not affect the normal operations of the School.

She also commended ZESCO, police and the fire brigade for working closely with the school authorities in putting off the fire.

The gutting of Choma Secondary Kitchen comes barely two weeks after Macha girls secondary school  and Sikalonga secondary school Kitchen which are all grant aided institutions were also gutted.
