Villagers in Ndoka area of Kalabo district in Western province are living in fear because of a hippo that is allegedly terrorising people in the area.

The villagers have abandoned cultivation of their maize fields for fear of being attacked by the beast.

The villagers have since appealed to the Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) to immediately chase away the wild animal before a disaster happens.

ZANIS reports from Kalabo district that highly placed  ZAWA officials confirmed the incident in an interview.

They said they received the report on the mammal attack but have however assured the villagers of safety as the Authority has sent its officers to the area  to monitor  the behavior of the animal.

ZAWA officials stressed that action could only be taken depending on the  behavior of the animal after monitoring and an assessment was completed.

The villagers are demanding that the animal be killed but officials say the animal can only be killed if it is wounded and chased away from the community if it is not causing any harm.

The hippo becomes the second animal to have terrorised villagers in the area in a pace of two weeks.

The first one being a buffalo that was killed two weeks ago after it attacked and wounded a 75-year-old woman.
