FOUR people have been brutally murdered in separate incidents in Chipata and Lundazi, Eastern Province Commissioner of Police Grace Chipalila has said.
Ms Chipalila said a man of Chipata allegedly murdered his wife using a wooden stick and a man in Lundazi allegedly murdered his younger brother in a fight.
Ms Chipalila told journalists in Chipata yesterday that two people were also separately found dead and it is suspected that they were murdered.
All incidents happened over the weekend.
She said in the first Chipata case, Evelyn Phiri, 36, was allegedly murdered by her husband only identified as Soko, 42, on February 2.
“The couple went out together on the material day. Sadly, they picked up a quarrel resulting in Evelyn being hit with a wooden stick. She was rushed to Mwami Hospital and later transferred to Chipata General Hospital, where she died,” Ms Chipalila said.
She said in a similar incident in Lundazi, Mabvuto Nyirenda, aged about 35, allegedly murdered his younger brother, Medson Nyirenda, 17, after the two picked a quarrel.
Ms Chipalila said the older Nyirenda is on the run.
She also said that unknown people murdered a Chipata resident identified only as Davie around 03:00 hours on Monday in Kapata Township.
The body was picked by the police and the deceased was bleeding from the mouth and nose.
The police are also looking for suspects in the murder of a Chipata resident, Chimwemwe Phiri, 18, whose body was dumped in an unused shop in Referendum Township between January 30 and January 31.
Police picked a body of another Lundazi resident, Daniel Mtongo, 42, who drowned in the Lundazi River after a beer binge.
Ms Chipalila said no foul play is suspected.
She said on the same day around 11:00 hours, a Zesco marketing agent, Wilson Singiza, 23, was electrocuted while trying to connect power to a shop of a client in Lundazi.
And 12 people were injured when a truck in which they were travelling careered off the road and overturned in Lundazi. They are admitted to Lundazi Hospital for treatment.
Three others escaped unhurt. The accident was reportedly caused by the driver, Dickson Zimba Chipolonga, who lost control of the vehicle.
He is on the run.
