Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia have signed Zambian midfielder Julius Situmbeko for the new season that kicks off in February next year. Gor have also raided Western Stima’s den and run away with defenders Daniel Onyango and Kevin Oluoch and midfielder Joseph Kariuki from Karuturi Sports. Situmbeko, who was among Zambian midfielders in this year’s edition of the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup played in four venues in Kenya, joins the club from Power Dynamos of Lusaka. Gor secretary, George Bwana, said Situmbeko is now their player after signing all the necessary documents with his former club, Power Dynamos. Bwana said Situmbeko would feature in all their national and international assignments in the coming season.
“We have signed him (Situmbeko) alongside other players in this transfer window as we have a huge task ahead in our national and international assignments,” Bwana told FeverPitch. Situmbeko was one of the key midfielders who propelled Chipolopolo to a third place finish in the just concluded Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup at Nyayo National Stadium on Jamhuri Day. Zambia defeated Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro Stars 6-5 on post-match penalties to emerge play-off winners in an event won by Kenya’s Harambee Stars, who defeated former champions Sudan 2-0. Gor, who are coached by Scot Bobby Williamson, are expected to take part in the Africa Champions League and Cecafa Clubs Championships besides other local competitions, which include defending the league title and the KPL Top Eight Championships. Mr Bwana said they had given their players in the national team time to rest before engaging them in the signing of new contracts. They include goalkeeper Jerim Onyango, defenders David Owino ‘Calabar’ and Musa Mohammed and strikers Edwin Lavatsa and Paul Kiongera.
“We’ll are not yet done with our playing unit and we’ll conclude before the transfer window closes,” he told FeverPitch. On why they have not sought established players when faced with tough international assignments, Bwana said “Our strategy is to build players and we only go for whom we need”.
