Boxing Federation promises medals at Commonwealth Games

THE ZAMBIA Amateur Boxing Federation (ZABF) has promised to win medals at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games in Canada.

ZABF president, Thomas Chileshe said his organisation would work hard and ensure Zambia reaped maximum medals from the Commonwealth Games.

Zambian boxing last got a gold medal at the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games through Kennedy Kanyanta and the nation has since been struggling to equal that feat.

In remembering global icon, Nelson Mandela, who died last Thursday, Chileshe said the only way the Zambian boxing fraternity would honour the former South African president was by bringing medals from the Commonwealth Games next year in July.

“Mandela showed his commitment to sports during and after his tenure as president. The federation will remember him for his noble gesture of nurturing sports to greater heights. He was a man of greater ambitions, not fighting for himself but for the whole community,” he said of Mandela, who was an amateur boxer in his youth.

Chileshe said boxers should emulate the discipline and perseverance of Mandela which made him achieve a lot in life.

“Today, we describe Mandela as a great man because he knew that discipline and perseverance is the key to achieving greatness in life. Boxers should take on discipline has a cardinal tool if their career will last for a long time and achieve greater things in life,” he said.

And Netball association of Zambia (NAZ) president Gertrude Mukumi said the association will remember Mandela for the big role he played in initiating the Diamond Challenge Cup.

“One of the major roles Mandela played in netball is initiating the Diamond Challenge Cup in which the Zambian netball team has participated three times. “The Challenge Cup has helped the netball team improve their playing skills and learn from other countries. In other words, the cup is not just about the competition but improves the standards of netball in Africa,” she said.

Mukumi said it was a rare gesture that a former boxer would have a vision of improving netball.

She said NAZ would strive to honour Mandela next year in April during the  tournament.
