MOPANI Copper Mines (MCM) has partnered with Kitwe City Council (KCC) to rehabilitate a 4.9 kilometre stretch of Boma Street and its extension to the golf club in Nkana West.

The move is part of the mining giant’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative to revamp vital infrastructure that contribute to national development.

MCM chief executive officer Danny Callow said at a Press briefing on Monday that the company was spending K13 million on the project, which involved construction of 4.9 kilometres of an asphalt road from 11th Street to Nkana Golf Club and resurfacing of the 5, 000 square-metres of the car park at the golf club.

“Mopani is working on the 3.6 kilometre stretch from Mindolo Road to the golf club, including resurfacing of the car park while KCC will work on the 1.3 kilometre stretch from 11th Street to Mindolo Road,” he said.

Mr Callow said the whole stretch would be constructed with all associated infrastructure such as walkways, road signs and drainage system to ensure that the road network was user-friendly to motorists and pedestrians alike.

He said Boma Street was a crucial part of the road network in Kitwe, which at some point served as an important by-pass for heavy traffic during the construction of the ring road.

Kitwe Mayor Chileshe Bweupe thanked MCM for its continued effort to promote infrastructure development in the city.

“The rehabilitation of Boma Street and its extension to the Golf Club offers us many benefits as a city.

“Apart from facilitating smooth and quicker flow of traffic, the new look Boma Road will also add to the beauty of the city,” Mr Bweupe said.
