Masumba’s conviction has vindicated govt – Kapeya

Chief Government Spokesperson Mwansa Kapeya says the conviction of Sports Deputy Minster Stephen Masumba is a clear demonstration that the Patriotic Front (PF) government does not interfere in the affairs of the judiciary.

Mr. Kapeya has told QFM News in an interview that Mr. Masumba’s conviction has also vindicated the PF government of allegations that it has been shielding Members of Parliament with court cases who have been defecting to the ruling party.

Mr. Kapeya adds that such a conviction is a further demonstration that under the PF government it does not matter whether one is a Minister or an ordinary citizen in being answerable to the law.

He says Mr. Masumba just like any other Minister is a Zambian who is answerable to the law.

Mr Kapeya however, states that Mr. Masumba has the right to appeal against his conviction.

Asked on Mr. Masumba’s status in government following his conviction, Mr Kapeya says it is President Michael Sata prerogative to decide fate of the Mufumbwe Member of Parliament.
