ZAMBIA’S badminton prodigy Chongo Mulenga won bronze during the Morocco International Under-18 Championship that was held in Casablanca from 7-10 November this year.
Mulenga, who recently won gold and bronze at the Ethiopian Junior Championship last month, cruised past Oussama Adir of Morocco with a convincing 21-4, 21-4 victory to set up a semi-final match against Abraham Ayittei of Ghana.
The Zambian, however, settled for bronze after losing 21-11, 21-16 to Ayittei who went on to win the junior championship after beating Youcef Medel of Algeria in the final.
This event was sanctioned by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) that was carrying junior world ranking points and Mulenga was on a good run for qualification to the 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympics, where African players (both boys and girls) with the highest ranking from Africa will take part.
Mulenga also participated in the Morocco International tournament where he was eliminated in the quarter-final stage after putting up a spirited fight but lost 2-1 to Medel of Algeria.
He defeated Prakash Vijayanath of South Africa 2-0 before bowing out of the competition following a defeat to Medel.
National coach Juma Muwowo also took part in the senior tournament but failed to go past Philip Dicher of Germany in the quarterfinals with a 21-9, 21-11 defeat after beating Ahmed Ksikes of Morocco in the second round.
